1. Hirsch Herd Finding place
for discovery A family of deer stopped me in my
tracks on a morning walk before a major surgery planned later that day. Each
time I stumble upon a deer, they bring me to a specific sense of wonder and
instantly connect me back to part of myself I can disconnect from, a trust in
nature perhaps. oil on canvas,
framed w. 82.5cm h. 67cm
d.2.5cm £550 TGB
2. Deer keeper Finding place for ancestral stories Hirsch, my mother’s maiden name, is
given to people who looked after deer or lived near a field of deer. An
accidental paint splash on my freshly laid out palette when setting out to
begin the painting was the fortuitous representational shape that would become
the deer keeper. oil on canvas w.61cm h.46cm d.3cm £330
TGB
3. Golden era Finding place to settle This fox-like
creature might be keeping his ears up for predators, but he has found a good
spot, and I reckon life is Ok. That shape on the left, originated as an
abstraction of a deer or a sign of early human folly. Industry and folly will
come, but for now the fox can settle. oil
on canva w.61cm h.46cm d.3cm £330 TGB
4. Mind The
Gap Finding place to
breakthrough This has an underpainting of two women sitting by water in
deep conversation about identity (and hiding roots) after a trip to Hastings to
see Chaim Soutine and Leon Kossoff. An ‘automatic’ painting, leaving space to
reveal an opening. I was trying to reconcile the initiating conversation about
concealing and revealing identity. oil

d.3cm £550 TGB
5. Hampstead
window Finding place in
Rosslyn Hill This is one from my friend Corrie’s
studio, in the soon to be converted police station in Hampstead. The sign on the
studio door read ‘Processing and Legal Aid’ but the room had now been
transformed into the ideal painter’s studio. oil
on linen w:61cm h.51cm d:2cm £330 TGB
6. Come here,
pup Finding place for showing love
Hattie
was like an auntie to Mishkin, a white lurcher. If you look hard enough, you
might just find her in the coat as a black celestial saluki hound. oil

7. Tropical
Gardens I Finding place to celebrate colour I painted this
after a holiday in India, intoxicated by the wonderful colours and exuberant
vegetation there. It isn’t an image of one particular garden, more an image
that tries to recreate the feeling of being surrounded by luxuriant tropical
vegetation and vibrant colour. oil on canvas w.66cm

8. 2000 years
of mind Finding place in collective memory oil on canvas w.240cm

9. Hampstead Heath Finding
place to transform the familiar I walk near
this part of Hampstead Heath and wanted to transform a familiar green landscape
into a mosaic of vibrant colours and patterns in this painting yet still show
it as a recognisable landscape. oil on canvas

Nature Finding place to grow If we care for
nature, it will take care of us. oil

17. Flight of the forest Finding place for folk tales and fairy stories I enjoy
folk tales and fairy stories which often involve animals with special powers,
and where magical action takes place in forests. This painting is an imaginary
scenario of trying to escape from wolves in a forest. oil on canvas w.61cm
h.76cm d.2cm £450 GO
18. Bright Shallows Finding
place to chill The sound of
water has a calming effect and induces deep relaxation. oil on wood w.40cm

about endangered animals and global warming. oil on canvas w.60 cm

that are endangered worldwide.

21. Last day of summer, letting go of purple
Finding place in finding human spirit This charming girl
was going to have her purple and blue braids taken out later that day,
signalling the end of summer. oil on canvas w. 45cm
h.55cm d.2cm £885 FB
22. Children of
Sun and Sands Finding place in
simple play A composition from
a group of children playing with their mother I saw on a trip to Eastboune. oil on canvas w.45cm h.55cm d.2cm £765

23. City Road Lock, Islington Canal Finding place for companionship I often walk along this canal and like
the mixture of contemporary and older industrial buildings and beautiful willow
trees near City Road Lock. It was a spring day and the leaves on the trees were
very bright. I wanted to capture these colours and those of the industrial
bricks and used the companionship of two women sitting on the raised lock
talking together as the focal point of the painting. oil on canvas w.101cm
h.76cm d.2cm £550

24. Summer walk, Hampstead Heath Finding place for summer’s contrasting details. On a very bright summer day the light
can be so dazzling that contrasts are exaggerated and it’s hard to see detail
clearly - I wanted to try and convey that feeling after a walk on a hot summer
afternoon on Hampstead Heath.

25. The Garden Finding place to see what emerges. I used a blue
ground as Matisse did in ‘The Conversation’ which lent the painting an
otherworldly atmosphere. This was quite liberating as I realised, I didn’t have
to paint everything literally. acrylic on
stretched canvas w.161.5cm h.113cm

27. Hattie and Fatemah drawing on the
towpath Finding place
through friendship, water and wildflowers Hattie and Fatemeh
were drawing on the Regents Canal near the Angel, completely surrounded by
wildflowers. I made a drawing of them, and then a young man with an old school
film camera came along and took photos of me drawing them. I made a few
paintings based on these sketches which became increasingly abstract with marks
and streaks standing in for flowers and foliage. oil on linen w.30cm
h.40cm d.2cm £700 DB
28. Plant woman and boy Finding place to recollect This painting came
out of a drawing and is based on me and my son. There was a mirror and a huge
plant in front of me. The scene caught my eye because I happened to be wearing
a top with a plant design on it which I found amusing. My son was reading in the
foreground. Looking at the painting and earlier photos of it on my phone I
realise I’d forgotten that it took its time and went through a lot of changes
and tweaks. oil on stretched

29. Fatemeh Finding place in nature with a friend A painting of my friend Fatemeh, made
from a drawing of her I made in a park. acrylic on panel (framed) w.40cm h.50cm d.3cm £850 DB

in the natural world.
